Gränges is committed to mitigating climate change with a goal to reach net-zero by 2040. To reach net-zero, Gränges is taking action across the full value chain – from sourcing and circularity to product innovation and investment in decarbonization and recycling.
The aluminium industry is considered a hard-to-abate industry with a highly energy-intensive production process. As a manufacturer of rolled aluminium products, Gränges’ largest climate impact originates from the value chain, particularly from metals sourcing. Gränges has set mid-term 2030 goals for scope 1+2 and scope 3 emissions as key steps toward reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. These goals have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative to align with the Paris Agreement. This is why sourcing low-carbon aluminium and recycling are key to decarbonization. Main actions to reduce own emissions (scope 1+2) include fossil-free energy sourcing.
Close to 90 percent of Gränges’ greenhouse gas emissions originate from scope 3. To reduce these emissions, increased recycled aluminium and low-carbon aluminium are key levers. Gränges is committed to circularity, integrating practices in its operations to keep materials and resources in use for as long as possible through reuse, recycling, design and circular business models.
Low-carbon aluminium sourcing and partnerships One important lever in reaching net-zero is the continued transition of the primary aluminium sector toward low-carbon products and production. Availability currently varies by geography and renewable energy conditions. To increase and secure the use of low-carbon primary aluminium, Gränges focuses on long-term supplier partnerships.
Recycling investment and partnerships Investing in recycling is essential to decarbonizing the aluminium value chain. With up to 95 percent less energy required compared to production of primary aluminium, recycled aluminium offers an effective path to lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Long-term, closed-loop partnerships secure access to recycling streams and reduce dependence on primary aluminium.
Circular alloy/product innovation Gränges focuses on alloy design and innovation to improve recycling rates and alloy recyclability, enabling the use of both pre- and post-consumer scrap. The company collaborates with customers in key markets to develop circular alloys that meet sustainability requirements. Gränges continuously work to execute on product development, enabling a higher share of recycled aluminium in Gränges' products.
In its manufacturing processes, Gränges improves energy and resource efficiency while exploring both established and emerging decarbonization technologies and fossil-free energy sources. Access to fossil-free energy is a key enabler of the company’s transition towards lower-carbon production.
Energy & resource efficiency Gränges works to increase material and energy efficiency across its manufacturing processes by improving capacity utilization, productivity and resource use. By optimizing production flows and reducing losses, the company can lower energy intensity while supporting more efficient and sustainable operations.
Analysis & investment in decarbonization tech Gränges continuously assesses decarbonization technologies that can support the transition toward lower-carbon production. This includes evaluating technologies based on their technical maturity, potential climate impact, investment needs and relevance for the company’s different operations and markets.
Fossil-free energy sourcing Gränges is increasing the share of fossil-free energy across its operations as part of the transition toward lower-carbon production. Several facilities already source fossil-free electricity through energy attribute certificates. This approach enables Gränges to reduce the climate impact from its own operations while adapting energy sourcing to local market conditions and availability.
